WAR HORSE: INSIDE THE HORSE

So this easter I popped to a little talk by Associate Puppetry Director Tommy Luther. He explained the process of how this spectacular and ingenious show was developed - from original concept, through workshops, to first performances, and then to productions around the world.

It was a really interesting talk and we got a close up look at the actual horses and how the puppetry works with them.

One thhing he mentioned a lot was putting breath into your character  He used and example of a simple paper puppet, by making it look like it's breathing we immediately  believe it's alive.

He also explained the different horse runs, 1step, 3 step, 4 step etc. so walk, canter, gallop. And actually did them on his four legs infront of him, pretty amusing.

He also taught us the different horse sounds. the three puppets moving the horses mak these noises and each different puppeteer has a different noise. The fact that horses ungs are 3X the size of humans the fact they have three people making these sounds make it very realistic.

What I found the most interesting part of the talk was how they made the puppet. a lot of health a saftey went into them as people had to hold it up and move it around for hour.

The small little things the horse does makes it seem more and more realistic e.g when you stroke he puppet the puppeteer makes it look like the skin vibrates to the touch.
